Where to stay in Girona: the honest guide
We're a family business and we've run 8 apartments in the Barri Vell (Old Town) since 2018. This guide explains which part of Girona suits your trip, and also tells you when we are NOT the best option.
Which area should you choose in Girona?
The Barri Vell (Old Town) is the historic centre: the Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter, the city walls and the stone streets. Much of it is pedestrianised, everything is walkable, and in the evening, once the day-trippers leave, it turns quiet and very beautiful. This is where we are.
Mercadal and the Eixample, across the Onyar river, are commercial Girona: shops, the market, more traffic and modern buildings. Practical, but with less charm.
The station area works for a one-night stopover with the high-speed train (AVE). It's about a 20-minute walk from the Old Town.

When is the Old Town worth it?
- If you're coming to see Girona: you'll sleep 1 minute from the Cathedral and step out of the door straight into the monumental heart of the city.
- If you like strolling out to dinner without a car: restaurants, ice-cream shops and bars are less than 5 minutes' walk away.
- If you're coming to ride: the classic cycling routes start here (we wrote a cyclist's guide).
- If you travel as a family: the pedestrian streets have a calm you'll appreciate with children.
When is it NOT the best option?
To be fair, here's the other side:
- If you want the car at the door. The Old Town is pedestrianised. We have an arrangement with a car park about 50 metres away, but there is no parking at the doorstep.
- If you need a 24-hour reception and hotel services. Our check-in is automatic with a code and we're reachable on WhatsApp. If you want daily cleaning and a concierge, a hotel will suit you better.
- If your mobility is very limited. Our building has a lift, but the neighbourhood is made of stone, with slopes and steps on some routes.
When should you visit Girona?
- May: Temps de Flors, the flower festival that fills the whole city. The prettiest week and the busiest: book months ahead.
- Spring and autumn: the best seasons for walking and cycling.
- Summer: a perfect base to combine the city with the Costa Brava (the coves are half an hour away).
- Late October to November: Fires de Sant Narcís, the city's main festival.
How do you get to Girona?
- By high-speed train (AVE): about 40 minutes from Barcelona-Sants. Girona station is about a 20-minute walk from the Old Town.
- From Girona-Costa Brava airport: a taxi to the Old Town costs roughly €35.
- From Barcelona-El Prat airport: commuter train or Aerobús to Sants, then the AVE to Girona.
